Group stage

World Cup Groups Explained

How World Cup groups work, including points, rankings, goal difference, fair-play scores, and best third-place teams.

The basic points system

The group stage uses a league table. Wins, draws, and losses turn into points.

When teams are tied on points

FIFA ranking rules first compare results among the tied teams, then group-wide goal difference, goals scored, team conduct score, and FIFA/Coca-Cola Men's World Ranking if still needed.

Why third place matters in 2026

Finishing third does not always mean elimination. The eight best third-place teams across all 12 groups also reach the Round of 32.
