Match time

Why Is the Match Still Going After 90 Minutes?

Understand stoppage time, extra time, and penalty shoot-outs when a football match goes past 90 minutes.

Stoppage time is part of normal time

The referee adds time for substitutions, injuries, time-wasting, disciplinary delays, VAR checks, goal celebrations, and other delays.

Extra time is separate

Extra time is used only when competition rules require a winner after a tied match. It is usually two 15-minute periods.
